While the Okavango Delta is considered a premier destination of Botswana and although relatively expensive to explore this environment, one can still enjoy this vintage place with or without a vehicle. The small dusty town of Maun is the gateway to the recently encrypted UNESCO 1000th world heritage site. With a pool of lodges, hotels, guest’s houses and campsites in the town, accommodation can be very affordable with the provision of pitching your own tent or sleeping in readily made tent or just a hotel room.

Moreover, there are so many activities that can be conducted starting from Maun and ending in Maun or going as far as Kasane. One needs only few nights under canvas and conduct tours that are well rewarding into these areas.

If you have arrived well in time in this old classic town that combines modern architecture and classic traditional huts build with mud and thatch (No Skyscrapers), one can kick start safaris by embarking on a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta.  Scenic flights or game flights are conducted by small air planes that carry up to 6 passenger including the bush pilot. This flights offer an eagle eye view of this mosaic of water channels, lagoons, islands, reeds and wildlife at low loftiness.

The flight takes almost 90 minutes and this is one activity that need not to be missed while in the place of short reeds, Maun. There are a number of air charter companies that operates from Maun International Airport and they offer this rewarding activity.



Once done with the scenic flight, this is a time to relax in your chosen place of accommodation. At dinner, your guide will pay you a visit for a post safari briefing. A day trip in the Moremi Game Reserve is another way of exploring northern Botswana. Day trips start and end in the place of small reeds, Maun. The Moremi Game reserve covers a third of the Okavango Delta and fauna and flora found in the Delta also call Moremi Home.

After driving for more than 90 Km from Maun, you will then reach this world finest game reserve in terms of fauna and flora. Despite its small size, the reserve is famous for its large concentration of animals all year round. A drive around the park will leave you thrilled, educated and wanting for more. Game drives are conducted by trained and licenced professional tour guides who know Moremi and surrounding areas like the back of their palms. The Moremi day trip can be enhanced by conducting a 1 hour boat cruise along the channels and rivers that begin in the Delta and feed the reserve. Yet another way of exploring the delta waterways.

Light breakfast and packed lunch are served in route to Moremi with the inclusion of bottled water and soft drinks (Non Alcoholic). After driving around Moremi, you will then head back for Maun where you will relax and wait for another game activity.

The Mokoro or Dugout canoe is the classic mode of transport that was used way back by the BaYei tribe in search of food in the delta. Today, the Mokoro plays an important role in activities conducted in the delta. It is one another activity not to be missed while exploring the delta waterways. Mokoro excursions are conducted by professional and trained pollers who are licenced to do so.

After breakfast at your lodge, your guide will pick you up and embark on a short drive to The Mokoro Station where you will find your poller readily waiting for you. Only 2 guests board the Mokoro and the third being your poller. Few inches away from the water, the Mokoro cruise slowly in the slowly meandering delta channels in search of birds that call Okavango home. This is yet another activity that will give you a glimpse of bird life in the delta. Lunch is served in islands that makes up the delta and sometimes followed by nature walks, another traditional way of exploring the fauna and flora of Okavango. Just before sunset, you will find a place to stop and have a chance of witnessing the African sun setting in the horizon and later return to the Mokoro station where you will find your guide waiting for you.

The Mokoro excursions can be done a day after a scenic flight in order for you to extend your stay by spending few nights in the Moremi Game Reserve, Preferably 2 nights, then moving up north in the Chobe National Park where you can spend again more nights then heading for Kasane to end the journey.
