The annual barbel runs have begun!
The panhandle’s famous barbel runs are in full-swing. Guests at Nxamaseri Island Lodge have been having a wild time catching and releasing at the barbel runs.
The barbel runs are a yearly feeding frenzy of catfish (barbel) that enter the main channels of the Okavango’s panhandle to feed. Tiger fish take advantage of this feeding frenzy and follow the runs, feeding on the barbel as they move upstream.
The runs occur every year in the Northern corner of Botswana (the panhandle) and only during a brief window in September and October. This is one of Nxamaseri’s biggest attractions and is a tremendously fun and exciting experience for fishermen.
